What is Social Support?

Most people think of social support as the network of family and friends that a person turns to in times of need. However, from a theoretical perspective, social support extends beyond a social network, and the concept of
companionship and social belonging.

Categories of Social Support:

Social Network

Interpersonal relationships and meaningful human interactions; such as family, friends, work associates; mentors, healthcare providers.

Esteem

Expressions of confidence or encouragement; such as providing affirmations, givingcompliments; celebrating successes; reminding someone of strengths, challenging negative self-talk.

Emotional

Physical or emotional comfort; such as hugs, pats on back, listening and empathizing, being caring and present..

Informational

Offering facts or relevant information; such as giving advice, sharing experience,
teaching about a topic, helping a person understand potential next steps, giving financial, legal, health,
or career advice.

Tangible or Instrumental

Taking on responsibilities for someone so they can deal with a problem; such as lending/giving money,

doing chores or errands, offering to drive, taking meals to sick person.

Why We Value Social Support

Having a strong social support system is crucial for our well-being and psychological health. It can help us cope with trauma, personal crisis, serious illness, or simply provide us with a sense of belonging and joy.

Especially when dealing with chronic pain or a serious health condition, having a network of peers and health professionals who understand and empathize with us can make a huge difference in our health and quality of life:

  • bolster self-confidence

  • increase optimism and motivation

  • improve coping skills & resilience

  • reduce impact of stress

  • improve functioning (cognitive, immune

       cardiovascular, neuroendocrine)
